The Learning Center offers support services
for learners through nearly every stage of their academic
career. Services include:
- Peer Tutoring
- Group Study Area
- Computers and typewriter for student
use
- Testing room for make-up or alternative
testing
- Audio-visual academic support materials
- Tutoring in academic subjects
In addition to all these services, the Learning
Center also offers comfortable environment for students,
faculty members, and community members to study for classes
or improve academic skills. Come in for a cup of coffee
and pick up a newspaper and relax!
"ACCUPLACER" Testing
Assessment (ACCUPLACER) testing focuses on the basic skill
areas of reading, writing, and math. These tests are not
graded; the score is used solely to assist the student in
selecting appropriate courses. Admission to a degree or
certificate program requires completion of the ACCUPLACER
test. Students must have the ACCUPLACER placement results
prior to registering for mathematics, reading, speech, and/or
written composition courses. The Learning Center (262-0327)
coordinates all ACCUPLACER activity on the Kenai River Campus.
ACCUPLACER Assessment is recommended for all students.

Adult Basic Education
The Learning Center, in collaboration with Proliteracy
Worldwide, the Orton Dyslexia Society, the Alaska Adult
Education Association, Volunteers in Service to America
(VISTA), AmeriCorps National Service Program and the College
Learning and Reading Association, offers free Adult Basic
Education, including GED preparation and testing, English
as a Second Language instruction, and Literacy training.
Basic skills refresher courses are FREE and participants
can register anytime. Our sites include KPC, Kenai, Ninilchik
and Tyonek. Students can upgrade skills for personal or
employment needs. Traditional subjects include math, reading,
writing, social studies, and science. Life-coping skills
are also offered. Free seminars have included such topics
as "Life After Public Assistance" and "Dyslexia--The
Hidden Handicap."
Disabled Student Services
KPC students with documented temporary or permanent disabilities,
including learning and physical disabilities, receive specialized
support services which can include: note takers, test accommodations,
readers, adaptive equipment, sign language interpreters,
mobility aids and specialized tutoring. Referrals can be
made through local agencies, Student Services or by self-referral.
Tutor Training, 262-0327
Tutor training includes Beginning, Advanced, and Master
Certification from the College Reading and Learning Associations
(CRLA). On-campus tutors may assist their peers in academic
courses, Adult Basic Education, or English as a Second Language.
Tutors may also tutor in public schools.
Testing, Distance Education and Correspondence, 262-0327
The Learning Center supports many of the testing needs of the University and also serves the community as a testing site for many national tests, which are used for admission, gaining college credit, and professional certification. The Learning Center is the designated proctor site for UAA Distance Education courses, including distance delivered courses from KPC. Do you have questions regarding test proctoring services for courses outside the UAA system?
If you are a student taking a course outside the UAA system, such as UAF or UAS, or any other campus outside Alaska, no problem! Complete a Proctor Request Form from your University’s Distance Ed Department and return it to the Learning Center, Room 153, to the attention of Pam McDermott, Test Examiner. If you have any questions, contact us at (907)262-0327. Or email Testing Services.
Proctor fees are assessed for tests outside the University of Alaska system.
Are you an instructor outside the UAA System, such as UAS or UAF, needing to arrange proctored exams? Once you have approved us as a test site for your student, test information can be delivered to Testing Services. Test information must be received no later than a week prior to the test date.

Family Reading Center, 262-0329
The center was established in 1994 and is staffed by AmeriCorps to promote family literacy. The “Read to Your Baby” project is the primary focus of the Family Reading Center and is supported by local fundraising events throughout the year, as well as donations by local service clubs.
Literacy Program, 262-0327
The KPC Literacy Program (which includes ABE, GED, and ESL
programs) is an accredited affiliate of Proliteracy
Worldwide. We provide free tutoring to individuals wanting
to improve their reading and writing skills. Community volunteers
are trained as tutors.
English as a Second Language, 262-0327
ESL instruction is available to non-speakers of English
as well as those who do not speak English well. Students
learn English for daily communication and work. Reading
skills are not a requirement for these classes. Instruction
is open enrollment and individualized. These courses are
free, and participants can register anytime.
GED - General Education Development, 262-0327
Free instruction and testing are provided for students who
wish to earn a high school equivalency diploma from the
Alaska State Department of Education. Individual, group
and some computerized instruction are available. Students
may prepare for the test by:
- Individual tutoring
- Joining a GED study group
- Borrowing GED study material
- Using computer tutorials and practice
tests
Online Writing Lab (OWL)
The OWL at Kenai Peninsula College offers KPC students writing resources, and the opportunity to submit writing assignments for feedback from our OWL tutor, or ask writing-related questions.
