Hey people! Hope you’ve had a great week so far. As promised, I have info on the auction for the Art Student League. It will occur on December 8, at the Visitors Center. I hope you make it because it will be great! Another interesting thing that is happening currently is the comedian who is coming to Kenai Peninsula College. Josh Sneed will be here on December 1 at 7:30 in the Ward Building. Students get in free if they bring one canned food item, $2 without the food item, while general admission will be $5 with a canned food item and $8 without. Did I mention that “Fun with Bettie” will be opening for him! I’d also like to remind students that certain scholarship deadlines are occurring soon. On November 30, the Oil Spill Recovery Institute Scholarship, and Glamour women scholarship deadlines will happen. Make sure to get those in! Also, the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce scholarship will meet its deadline on December3. If I were you guys, I would definitely take advantage of these scholarships if money may be a problem. Ok guys it’s just about December! Wow! Christmas is almost here!

November 27, 2007

Well, it’s another week… It is strange, but I only have a few more weeks as the Kenai Peninsula College Student Blogger. I’m sorry for the lateness of so many of my blogs. It’s hard to do them on time when you don’t have your own computer, but good news: I finally got one! Haha. It’s somewhat ironic seeing as I only have a few more weeks, but still. I hope everyone is having a great week. I’d like to just say that it would be a really good idea to get Flu shots! It’s running around a lot right now, and I have even had a bout of it also. Trust me, you don’t want to mess with it this year. It is pretty bad! Next thing on the agenda: I’m sure that just about everyone has heard about the art auction that is happening in early December. I’d encourage you guys to look into participating in one way or another. If you would like to, you can buy raffle tickets or some people may even enter their own pieces into the auction. You can start doing this on November 26th. I will have more information on this in the next blog. Till then, have a great week!

November 22, 2007

Hey everyone! Thanksgiving is here…WOW can you believe it? It seems like Halloween just happened! I can’t really say that this is going to be an ordinary Turkey Day, however. After all…there isn’t any snow! We can hope for it at least, well those of us who actually want the snow. Haha. There are so many festivities occurring that it is hard to not be put in the holiday season, or to hope for a White Christmas! Here’s an interesting fact. Did you know that Thanksgiving used to be on the fourth Thursday of November, but it was changed to the third Thursday when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president? Supposedly it was so that, there would be a longer shopping season for Christmas! Anyways… I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. Don’t forget that there will be a fireworks show at 7 on Friday in Kenai. Prior to that there will be the parade and throughout the entire night there will be a bonfire! Have fun!!!

November 21, 2007

Hey people! I hope everyone remembered to pay his or her tuition. I mentioned this last week, but the 20th of November was the last day to pay it, unless you were willing to retain a $100 late fee… I hope no one decided on that choice ha-ha. I nearly had to pay that late fee, but thankfully I was able to pay it in time! Wow, that was a load of stress taken away. Stress: that’s a term that we all use quite a bit. After all, the lives of college students as well as those who are in Jumpstart can be quite hectic. For those of you who are completely stressed out or just can’t wait for a break…it’s nearly here! December 13 and we are all done with the Fall Semester. Ooh, and after that it’s Christmas! That’s awesome! Hey, another cool thing to help tide over our stress is Mugz Coffee House. This place is located in the Blazey Mall and it is great! Every Monday night people have a chance to get onstage and take advantage of the Open Mic for 10 minutes. Trust me, you’ll hear a lot of great music and other things while you are there. Check it out!

November 13th

Hey you guys! Another few days have passed and it feels like it’s going to snow. I’ve never seen a winter that didn’t have snow till this late. I’m guessing it will snow this weekend. That’s great news for those of you who like to be outdoors, but for those who enjoy warmth (like me) the campus has several different activities coming up! Right now, however, I’m only going to tell you about one of them. I have to save some things for my other blogs! Does anyone like to sing, or play guitar, or, well, any other instrument?? If you do then you are in luck! There is another Open Mic night coming up this month. It will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2007 in the Commons. People who wish to perform can sign up at the student Union office, which is located across from the library. Remember… It’s from 6-9 at night so don’t be late! -- Holly

November 9th

Hola people! Once again I am somewhat out of things to say. I really try... I promise. I think I need to remind you of a few things also. For starters, I hope that everyone is aware that flu shots became available on November 7th. It’s important to have those! After all, it is reported that 36,000 people die a year from influenza, otherwise known as ‘the flu’. Actually, I suppose that was enough to remind you of right now. Ha-ha. Ok, next subject! Does anyone currently need a job? It just so happens that the Student Union is currently looking for a new Commerce Officer. The job is 20 hours a week and pays $8.50 an hour. Also, the bulletin board in the commons has a list of possible internships that it may be a good thing to look at. There are several different opportunities happening right now, so I would encourage everyone to look at the bulletin boards! You may find something very helpful there. -- Holly

November 2, 2007

I hope everyone had a great Halloween! I know I enjoyed mine quite a bit. It’s been years since I celebrated it and it was well worthwhile. I remember…I promised to stop speaking about Halloween and I keep doing it. Hey, it’s an important holiday! Hmm there really isn’t too much that I can talk about right now. I’m running out of ideas…help! Haha. Hmmm…I suppose I will just have to remind everyone of upcoming dates and deadlines or any other little thing. For starters, I would like to remind all of the Arts Students League members that there is a meeting on November 7, 2007 at 2:30 PM. This meeting will be held in the art room across from the library. Ok… I’m pretty certain that all of us students realize that the end of the semester is approaching at a quick speed. Remember… December 13 is the last day of classes. This brings me up to a few more important dates. For instance…November 20, 2007 is the DEADLINE for tuition and fees. Apparently there is a $100 dollar late fee assessment occurring. Alrighty then, I think that this will have to do till next Tuesday!

October 31, 2007

It’s Halloween!!! Is everyone as excited as me about it? I’m looking forward to having a great night of trick or treating. Haha, I’m barely 18 so I’m allowed…I think. If not I have the excuse of younger siblings to my advantage. :D I’d advise those of us who have exams in the morning to take it easy though. I know I know… exams the day after Halloween? Who made this craziness?! However, it is the season for midterms. Ugh. As for everyone that is going out: Be careful. It’s starting to get dark, a lot of crazy things happen on Halloween. Did you know that on this day in 1517 Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the church door? That event changes the history of the church! Fun information if you ask me. Anyways, I suppose I should tell you guys something important so here it is: November 19 is the last day to withdraw from a class, make a credit-to-audit-change and apply for Spring Graduation. Be careful of these dates. You don’t want them to pass by! Well, that’s all for now. Have a great Halloween!

-Holly

October 25, 2007

Wow…it’s almost the end of the week already. Amazing how fast that goes isn’t it? I’m done reminding you guys of Halloween events that are coming up... Ahhh! Wait a second…sorry, that’s not true. I just looked over my notes and I have one more thing to inform you guys about. There is Trick or Treat at Kenai Peninsula College on Wednesday October 31st from 3-5pm. The Departments that we all can go to for our treats are the bookstore, library, student union, learning center, financial aid, director’s office, student services, community relations, computer labs and the B & l offices. It will definitely be fun! Ok. Now I REALLY am done with the Halloween information. Seeing as it is that time of the semester…mid terms (ugh) I’d like to remind everyone that there are people all around campus that are willing to help those that need help. For instance, there is math help offered by Angela Richardson at the Learning Center (room 153) Monday’s, Wednesdays and Fridays. She offers help from Basic Math to Calculus. From 2-4pm you can get an appointment or walk-in from 4-6:15pm. I hope everyone will take advantage of the many opportunities we have!

October 23, 2007

Hey everyone! I hope you all have had a great week so far…enjoying all the Halloween festivities. You know what I mean…the parties, the dances everything like that. I’m sure most of you have gotten sick of all the Halloween information that I have given you so I assume that it is time to change it up a bit, besides telling one more little thing…It’s just one little thing, I know you won’t mind. Anyway, that’s enough of that. For all of you animal lovers, I’m sure you would like to know that the Nikiski Recreation Center is hosting what they call a Howl-ween party. In other words there is a pet costume contest! I think it will be pretty sweet. Also a reminder for everyone before I end this blog: Don’t forget that there will be flu shots held in the commons November 7th, 11:00 – 2:00!

October 19, 2007

When is it going to snow again?! I was dreading the snow only a few weeks ago but hey, I have studs on my tires now…bring on the snow! But with the snow coming Halloween is coming too, which I have mentioned several times. That is because there are so many things going on that night! I can tell everyone now that there will be a haunted house hosted by Nikiski’s finest drama teachers, which everyone can bring their children to…but until I get more information, that’s all that I’m saying as of now! Ha-ha. Hmm…I also know that several of the students at KPC have children of their own, and if approving, I’m sure the little kids would love to go to the Trunk or Treat and Scare House which will be hosted at Lighthouse Community Church. Some of you may ask what a trunk or treat is and this is what it is: Several cars are parked in a lot with their trunks open full of various candies and toys. Parents can walk their children around to get these treats while taking a break from the scare house inside of the church! Little children love it, and I’m sure some of the parents would enjoy not having to go all over town. We all know that can get tiring. Well, I’m off…I have more Halloween information coming up…just wait for the next blog!
October 16, 2007

Hey there everyone! Man, October really is a busy month! There are so many different things going on, guess that means I have a lot of stuff to write about huh? I think so. Ok, so here is a little bit of fun stuff going on. The Kenai River Dancers are going to have meetings for the next few upcoming months. These meetings will be held at the K-Beach Elementary school from 7-10 pm on the third Saturday of each month which are: October 20, 2007, November 17, 2007, December 25, 2007, and… January 19, 2008! Wow, can you believe a new year is almost here already? The next few months will be going pretty quickly in my opinion. This also means that the end of the quarter will be coming up too…Hope everyone is ready for all the midterms and the whole shebang. Speaking of which, I believe that November 19 is the last day to do a credit-to-audit change on your classes. Well that’s all for now folks!

October 12, 2007

Hola people! I hope everyone is having a great week. Wow, the weather has been bad lately. I myself went into the ditch today! Talk about scary! I wasn’t even going the speed limit…I was under! Guess that’s a reminder to everyone, especially me, to be CAUTIOUS now that the weather is getting trickier! But with the weather, fun things are coming too! There are so many things that will be going on this months that I couldn’t possible tell you about all of them. Right now I will just focus to a few. If you like to sing, you’ve got a chance coming up. On October 20th for 6-9 PM, there will be an Open Mic Night! In order to participate, you must signup. This can be done on the bulletin board across from the library…the art hallway. It’ll be very fun and I encourage everybody who likes to sing or would like to branch out to sign up!

October 9, 2007

It’s FLU SEASON! Yeah, I know the flu sucks, so that is why we, as students, especially should guard against it. Why students? Because we have to worry about assignments and attending class, and in some cases, going to work. You may have seen bulletins around campus promoting shots. If not, I have information to inform you about in this blog. On November 7, flu shots will be available at the school. They will be held in the commons from 11 am to 2 pm. In some cases, the shots may be free. For example, if your income per month is less that $1140, then they will be free. Otherwise, the cost will be on a sliding scale with the maximum amount at $24. Anyone can receive a flu shot also! Other vaccinations that you should consider include pneumococcal, tetanus diphtheria. It’s important guys, so look into it!

October 4, 2007

Wow, it’s hard to believe that it’s almost winter! First Thursday is today, which means all the new galleries will be opening around the Peninsula. I would suggest looking at The Fine Arts Center, Already Read, and The Alaska Visitors center. On a more fun note…I’m going to be 18 on Monday! Now I can vote. Speaking of which, I hope as many of you as possible voted on the elections held on October 2. I barely missed it, but I will be able to vote in the presidency election next winter. Hmm…now what? Oh, I know! The end of the month is Halloween, Which I’m sure EVERYBODY knows. Since it’s a holiday, there will most definitely be several events happening. If anyone would like these events to be given more recognition I would be happy to tell the students about them via a blog. Just letting everyone know! Also, the more events that I find out about, I will be sure to inform you all of them!

October 3, 2007

Hello everyone. It’s me… again. Ha-ha, so there really isn’t much going on right around now. Well, concerning the area we live in. A few things are happening in the United States, however. I feel that it is important to mention what is going around in our nation. Lately, several states are considering secession. This means that they will no longer be a part of the United States. The reasoning for this possible secession is the foreign wars that are constantly occurring, not the mention what could be considered a corrupt court system. For several years these situations have been a problem. Apparently there will be a meeting held on Wednesday concerning the topic. States that have secessionist actions are Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. That’s all for now, but if any of you would like to hear more, there are several articles concerning this topic. One of these is located here.

September 25, 2007

Wow, so another week has come and gone. It’s amazing how fast it goes sometimes. Like I said in the last blog, it is getting colder and colder everyday! Lots of changes are starting to happen…which reminds me! Once again, I’m on to the art stuff. The show that is being displayed in the college’s gallery is nearly over. If you haven’t seen it, which I’m sure most of you have, I think it is definitely worth going to see. The photographer is amazing! Also, the Kenai Peninsula Visitors Center has an exhibit called Alaska Positive. As I mentioned before, this exhibit is a juried photography show. This show will be held from September 19 through October 2. Next on the list is the Kenai River Marathon which is on the 30th of this month (September). Apparently the first 3 finalists will receive a medal, and the first 75 runners to sign up will receive a souvenir shirt. After running a race like this I assume you may be hungry, but don’t worry! Hot chicken broth, bratwurst and beer will be provided! I’d say it’s definitely going to be fun. Hey, winter’s almost here, we should all get out and do something! Have a good week everybody!

-Holly

September 28, 2007

Guys, I need some ideas on what to write! Ha-ha, it’s a bit hard for me to find these things seeing as I’m not a full-time student. At least I’m trying right? Right now I have a few tips, which I think I do all the time. Every check the bulletin boards? I’d advise everyone to try it! They are in just about every hall, and wow! They offer a lot of different things. Need help in a class? Well, there is at least one tutor listed that is looking to help a student. How about a job? There are at least 2 or 3 different positions posted on the boards. There are even posts showing living arrangement. If you need somewhere to stay, now you know where you might look. The Bulletins show a lot of different things so that students can be advised of what it going on and what opportunities they have. They are definitely worth checking out! Remember, the boards are changed out every two weeks so once you see something that interests you. Check it out in a timely fashion; it may not be on there after the two weeks that it was posted. Well, that’s all for now! I promise something a little more interesting next week!

September 20, 2007

Winter is coming! Everyone can tell it’s on its way. The leaves are turning colors and falling, the rain never seems to cease and don’t forget the chilly breezes that always seem to come at you! I for one am not a big fan of the chill in the air. However, seeing that winter is coming, we must begin to be a little bit more cautious on the roads and take or time. It may not seem like it but 4 months without snow can be hard on winter driving skills!

Don’t forget, those of us who have to commute any distance to get to the college must think about timing and weather conditions… Ok…so this may be getting old, but it is important to make it to class…and we all know that professors may not like it too much when we come in late!

Speaking of professors. I wanted to tell you guys that I will be doing blogs on professors…this way the students can get to know a little bit more about whose teaching them. I hope you guys will like it! Well, that’s all for today and I will be seeing you again!

-Holly

September 18, 2007

Hey guys. It’s been a long time since my last blog…Sorry about that. I got the flu earlier this week and I couldn’t get to a computer. Much less leave my bed. Haha. So to make up for lost time here is the blog! Ok, so let’s see... I think this week I should talk about voting. Borough Elections are being held on October 2, which is very soon. In order to vote you must be 18 and a resident of Alaska. I’m sure all of you knew this though. Other processes in voting may not be clear yet, so I’m going to cover a few of them.

First off: Where can you vote? Well, seeing as not everyone at the college may be voting from the same precinct, there is a number you can call to find out which locations you may vote at. This number is 1-888-383-8683, or 269-8683. When you call you will need to have your voter ID or Social Security number ready.

Second of all: What party are you voting for? Here are a few different party choices and their meanings:

When a person belongs to a party affiliation that is undeclared, they may be associated with a political party, but they do not care to declare which one.

When a person whose party affiliation is non-partisan, it means this person doesn't have preferences for one party over another.

A person who has marked other as their party affiliation is associated with a party that is not a recognized political party in the State of Alaska.

There are several different things that can be covered when it comes to voting so click here for a website that can help you out.

September 14, 2007

Hey everyone it’s time for another blog. Today, let’s take a break from the usual talk about deadlines. School is well underway, and by now some of you must be starting to get a little bit tired of it. It’s something all of us students, feel eventually. Days are getting shorter and colder, and sometimes you just want to take a break from the grind. I’ve got a few suggestions on how you can do that.

First off there is the option of seeing a movie. Right now there are several movies playing. Movies that are playing at the Kambe Theater in Kenai are: "The Bourne Ultimatum", "3:10 to Yuma", and "The Brave One". The show times this weekend for these movies are as follows:

"The Bourne Ultimatum" (PG-13): Fri., 9/14: (4:30), 7:30, 10:30, Sat., 9/15: (1:30), (4:30), 7:30, 10:30, Sun., 9/16: (1:30), (4:30), 7:30.

"3:10 to Yuma" (2007) (R): Fri., 9/14: (4:15), 7:15, 10:15, Sat., 9/15: (1:15), (4:15), 7:15, 10:15, Sun., 9/16: (1:15), (4:15), 7:15.

"The Brave One" (R): Fri., 9/14: (4:00), 7:00, 10:00, Sat., 9/15: (1:00), (4:00), 7:00, 10:00, Sun., 9/16: (1:00), (4:00), 7:00.

Another thing you might consider is going to Veronica’s Coffee House. This cute little coffee shop is located in Old Kenai near the Kenai Visitors center. It was built in 1916 and has since become one of the best Coffee Houses in town. Veronica’s hosts music all week with live performances on Fridays and Open Mic on Thursday. If you ever want to get up on stage, Open Mic starts at 6:30 PM and ends at 9:30PM. I’d highly encourage it. To see what it looks like, click here to link to a website depicting it.

Well, I think that is just about it. Everyone have a fun weekend, and I’ll see you next week!

-Holly

September 12, 2007

Hey, everybody, it’s Holly! Seeing as this is my second blog since I started this job, I think I will cover something important. How about deadlines and events that are coming up? Sounds good to me.

Many of the deadlines have passed so far, but there are still many to come! September 10 was the last day to Add/Drop classes, but in the event that performance and grades aren’t up to par, there is the option of auditing the course before the twelfth week of the semester ends. This means that no credit is received, but one is still present in the class, AND your GPA can be saved. This happens on November 19. Ok, moving on to the other deadlines.

Students are no longer able to get a 50% Refund of Tuition/Fees or change from Credit to No credit or Audit-to-Credit. The most important date to keep informed of, however, is applying for graduation. September 14 is the last day to apply for a UAA Spring 2008 Graduation. (Just to let you know, this is not the KPC graduation.) Finally, I’d like to let everyone know that the first Art meeting will be held today, September 12, at 2:30 P.M. If you are enrolled in an art class, you are automatically considered a member. Ok. I think that is all for now. Remember, I’d definitely appreciate ideas from students. I want to know what you guys want to hear more about. Also, just to make it easier, I’ll list the deadlines that I told you about in this blog, at the end of the page. Bye guys!

Sept. 10 Last Day for 50% Refund of Tuition/Fees
Sept. 10 Last Day to Add/Drop
Sept. 10 Last day Audit-to-credit Change
Sept. 10 Last Day Credit/No Credit Change
Sept. 14 Last Day to apply for UAA Spring 2008 Graduation.

September 7, 2007

Hey everyone! My name is Holly, and I will be the new student blogger for the Kenai Peninsula College. I’m new to the school, but I will do my best to keep everyone informed and interested! Also if anyone has a certain topic they would like me to cover, I would be more than glad to. My email will be posted at the bottom of the page (as well as an alternate one), so feel free to send it there. OK, now that we’re done with introductions, I’ll move on to a new topic: Sticks and Stones Alaskan Structure.

On May 12, 2007 the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center opened up their new exhibit, which is entitled: Sticks and Stones Alaskan Structure. Guest curator Don Mohr pieced the show together, and did a FANTASTIC job. The show features works by artists from all around the state of Alaska. In fact, our very own Celia Anderson did one of the pieces called “Fundamental Structure”. Other featured artists include Nikiski’s Chris Jenness and Anchorage’s Thor Evenson.

Much of the artwork is very expressive and some even shows political views. Artists used several different materials in the making of their works, so as to create different emotions and to catch the viewer’s eye. Many of the pieces are actually sculptures, or use different mediums like rocks, branches, even a whale bladder. It is quite an assortment of different materials, shapes, and impressions. That being said, you can be sure that there is some piece in the show you will like, regardless of who you are. This particular show will only be hosted till September 9, so be sure to go see it soon! But don’t worry, if you miss this, there are many more shows coming up, which I will keep you posted on. Next up in line at the Visitors’ Center is Alaska Positive, a statewide juried photography show that opens on September 10 and closes on the 30th. I hope you go see it; I know I definitely will!
