So long, farewell….

As you might have noticed, there is a new face on KPC’s blog. I had a lot of fun last semester writing in the blog and already kind of miss it. I don’t really have a great reason for giving the blog up, other than the fact that I just wanted to cut down on the million extra little things I had going on. I decided on going with a simple schedule and not many commitments for this semester. I may regret it here in a few weeks, but life will go on I suppose.

So take it easy on Todd, he is a sensitive guy. Haha, ok I’m kidding. But you guys could respond to his blogs every once in a great while to let him know that it is actually being read Smiley Face If you are at all curious to where I was finding all of those ridiculous holidays- the secret is out, http://www.oshel.com/everyday.htm

And for the last time….

Today is National Pie Day and Measure Your Feet Day! I am not a fan of pie so we can just toss that one out. Measure your feet day, however, we could have a little bit of fun with.

December 15, 2006

The end of the fall semester is finally here! This week was a long and crazy one; it feels good to finally breathe. What are you going to do with an entire month off? No homework, no tests, absolutely nothing to worry about- sounds perfect to me. Christmas is almost here and I am definitely in the holiday mood. What is the worst thing about this time of year? Turn on your radio and you will know what I am talking about. On every station Christmas music is merrily playing…over and over and over and over and over again. I like Christmas music- on Christmas. This reminds me of Christmas carolers. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone caroling around here before. What if they came to your door? What would you do? The first thing that comes to my mind is perfecting my snowball making technique. Hey, I said “what if”. I wouldn’t really do that…

I can’t get over the fact that the semester is over. I never thought it would end. Take the pressure of classes out of the mix, being at KPC in the past few months has been a lot of fun. Working here, I have met a lot of people and made lasting friendships. I’ve gotten to know the faculty and have learned a lot about them. Upon first entering the Business Office, one would never guess what is really behind the twinkle in the staff’s eyes. It doesn’t take too much time working there to figure it out. That office is full of fun and I’m glad that I was able to spend so much time there. I can’t figure out if I’ve spent more time laughing or working while on the clock though…just kidding! Alright, everyone have an awesome Christmas and don’t forget what is really important.

HINT: It’s not under your Christmas tree.

Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

Today is National Lemon Cupcake Day! Pucker up?!

December 7, 2006

One more week until Christmas break. What am I going to do? Sleep in. That is the first thing on my list. I’m sure sledding will work its way in at some point too. My aunt, who I haven’t seen in a few years, is coming up from California the day after Christmas. I am really excited about that. One look at her and you know where she is from. I am trying to get all of my homework and projects done now so I can just relax and spend time with friends and family over break. Setting up the Christmas tree is my favorite thing to do during the holiday- it didn’t use to be because I didn’t have the patience. Now, I love it. Next week is going to be a busy one for most of us, just remember to breath and think happy thoughts! Oh and I heard that the cute guy that works in Student Union got a girlfriend….dang.

Updates:

Notice anything different about the campus in the last couple of days? We got new furniture! I haven’t tried any of it out yet, so I guess I really cant make any promises on whether you will like them or not. But they do look cool, the small tables on the sides of them look really convenient.

There is an academic Internship open for Spring 2007 in Washington D.C. For more information, call Marian Mitchell at 907-786-1057.

As you have probably heard, one of our own students, Michael Christian, recently lost everything in a house fire. No one was injured, thank God, but all of his personal possessions and everything dear to him was destroyed. If the Christmas spirit is beginning to ignite in your own heart, you can make monetary donations or give gift cards to Dr. Boraas. His office is located in the Goodrich Building in room 212A. For more info, call Boraas at 262-0360.

The nursing students are graduating! The pinning ceremony will be on Wednesday, December 13th, from 6-9pm.

Pamyua will be in concert this Saturday, December 9th. It is at 7p.m. and tickets are going for $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The group performs in a number of different ways with a sound of tribal funk and world music. Don’t miss out on the chance to hear such a unique performance.

Today is National Cotton Candy Day! I really don’t like cotton candy, this holiday sucks.

December 1, 2006

Holy cow! We got some snow! Sledding is definitely part of my weekend plans. Christmas is coming up and I still have Christmas presents to get. It’s hard to figure out what to get somebody and I hate having to ask them. Your friends/family should know what you would like right? Well I have no idea what the people in my life want. Gift cards could work, but they are so impersonal. So I need some good but cheap ideas for Christmas presents, inform me on any good ideas that you may have. My aunt whom I haven’t seen in about 5 years is coming from California for Christmas so I am totally excited about that! She is one crazy lady, and I like crazy.

This weekend I will be decorating my house for Christmas. The rest of my family has graciously abandoned me for the weekend, so I thought I would try and do something productive. It could be a bad idea though, I have the smallest amount of patience when it comes to untangling Christmas lights and putting the tree together. All of the colors on the branches have to be matched with the corresponding colored hole….that just isn’t my cup of tea. But I will do it, or try anyways, so everyone can come home and be instantly filled with the Christmas spirit. I hope they don’t expect to come home to decorated cookies. As far as the whole cooking thing goes for me- I’m hopeless.

TODAY is Suzie Kendrick’s Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish her a happy birthday when you see her, she is one amazing lady!

Don’t forget about KPC Art Student League’s Winter Extravaganza! It is tomorrow @ 6pm at the Kenai Visitor & Cultural Center. There will be an auction of student art work, music, refreshments, desserts, and a raffle. I saw the raffle item, and it is beautiful. It is a black and white photograph taken by Alaska’s premiere photographer Barry McWayne. If you want a last minute raffle ticket, you can find them in KPC’s bookstore.

Pamyua will be in concert at the Kenai Cultural and Visitors Center on December 9th. It is at 7pm on Saturday, December 9th. The tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets can be bought at Kenaitze Indian Tribe on N. Willow St. in Kenai, Nakenu Family Center on N. Willow St. in Kenai, the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center, or call Michael at 398-1510.

November 28, 2006

My Thanksgiving was awesome. I was surrounded by good food and good people all weekend, it was a blast. Friday morning I participated in my first ever competitive shopping event. At 4:45 a.m. I was standing in line at Fred Myers, waiting to see what the so called “Black Friday” was all about. At 5:00 a.m. the doors were opened and I swear all at once 300+ car doors slammed in unison and hordes of professional shoppers swarmed in. I have never been so scared of women in my life. I have no problem in admitting that I was the weakling that morning. The look of death that I received from one elderly woman when I reached for the last package of Tupperware in the bargain bin stopped me dead in my tracks. I let her have it; God only knows what she would have done to me. What made the whole experience even better was the night before I watched the TV show ER (I’m addicted to it) and right after I hung up the phone from making solid plans for shopping the next morning with a friend, a young woman was rushed into the emergency room (on the show). She had been impaled by a Christmas tree decoration after being pushed by a fellow shopper when they both spotted a cute purse at the same time. Let’s just say that I stayed away from all Christmas decorations Friday morning and let the much more seasoned and serious shoppers have their way. We did get really good deals though, I got a lot of Christmas shopping done.

Other than that, I just spent some quality time with friends and family. I am excited about the snow we got Sunday night/Monday morning! I say it’s about time for some sledding and snow machining.

Updates:

Come check out the art gallery, many beautiful pieces that were created by KPC’s art faculty are being displayed.

Friday, Dec. 1st, there will be an Air Force Officer on campus to discuss commissioning programs. He will be in room 203 from 2-4pm.

Don’t forget about the KPC Art Student League’s Winter Extravaganza. It will be from 6-8:30pm on Saturday, Dec. 2nd @ the Kenai Visitor & Cultural Center. There will be an auction of student art work, music, refreshments, desserts, and a raffle. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door.

Today is Make Your Own Head Day!

…don’t ask me, I have no idea!

November 22, 2006

Well Tuesday was quite the day. After dealing with a broken cell phone, studying, and getting wrongly charged for overdraft fees from the bank (WELLS FARGO), I am glad it is Wednesday. It is just getting to be that time of the year I guess. I think that it is about time for some snow. The whole 10 below, frosty thing we have going on just isn’t cutting it. I am ready for some serious sledding too. I saw some pretty promising sleds at Safeway yesterday.

Basketball is going good. Ok, a little less than good but I am making the most of it. I do have a lot of fun; I just never knew an 11 year old could have so much attitude. We actually have a game tonight (6:45 at B&G Club if you would like to come cheer the guys on). They have been playing awesome, we don’t really keep track of the score but I think that we have only lost one game so far.

I am really looking forward to Thanksgiving. It is the best holiday in my family. Good food, good people—what more could you ask for?! I don’t know about your grandma, but my grandma makes THE BEST food ever and her Thanksgiving dinners are to die for. It is the most relaxing day of the year and I plan to take that very seriously. I just bought the game MadGab too. That has got to be THE best game ever created. If you haven’t played it, I suggest that you do. You have no idea what you’re missing out on.

The only thing really going on as of now is the KPC Art Student League’s Winter Extravaganza. It is on December 2nd at the Kenai Visitors Center from 6pm-8:30pm. There will be an auction of student art work, music, refreshments, desserts, and a raffle. This is a fundraiser event and there is a $5 suggested donation at the door. You can buy your raffle ticket at KPC Bookstore.

Today is Start Your Own Country Day. That is a scary thought…

Have a great Thanksgiving!!

November 16, 2006

Well it is Thursday…again. The most exciting thing about today is the rise in temperature. While it is still FREEZING outside, at least today I can feel my toes. It is getting to that time of year where the days seem to go on and on and on. There are some pretty grouchy people around here lately too. I guess we can give them the benefit and just say that it is because of the weather. I am flying solo for the next few weeks with the basketball team that I am coaching. The other coach is going on vacation and leaving me behind, not only in this ridiculous weather, but alone with nine 11 year old boys. If that combination doesn’t kill me- I am going to live forever. I consider myself a pretty nice person, but since this whole brilliant idea of coaching a boys and girls club team came into play in this last month, I have more than filled my quota of giving dirty looks and yelling at small children (they really are not that small). I have to admit I am overplaying the negative stuff. I really do have a ton of fun, mostly when I get the opportunity to show them that girls can play basketball too (they were under the impression that it was a “man’s” sport). Anyways, as always, I will keep you updated on that lovely situation.

Updates:

More changes are being made to the Constitution. Stop by Student Union to get more details.

DON’T forget about the free drive through flu shots TOMORROW. They will be available at the Sports Center from 8am-2pm and also at the Kenai Armory on South Forest Drive in Kenai.

KPC Art Student League’s Winter Extravaganza is going to be on December 2nd from 6-8:30pm. It will be at the Kenai visitor & Cultural Center. There will be an auction of student art work, music, and refreshments + desserts AND a raffle. This is a fundraiser event for the ASL (They will be taking donations *hint*)

The next Open Mic Night is on December 1st (NOT NOVEMBER 24th!). Come and support local talent and even do some performing yourself. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and see various types of talent.

Today is…Button Day. Please take a minute or two to appreciate your buttons. Where would your pants be without them??

November 14, 2006

Whew! I just got through with a huge presentation in my ASL class. I don’t think I was breathing the entire time. I’m glad that it is finally over though. I have been stressing that project for the past couple of weeks. What did you guys think about the power outage last night? I thought it was cool, there must have been 20 candles lit throughout my house. The wind was intense! So many trees fell throughout the night, we had a lot of clean up to do today. I definitely couldn’t sleep with the electricity out and the wind knocking things over all night. After I got use to the thrashing sound outside, the sound of the wind kind of became relaxing. Without so many distractions (the internet) I was able to get quite a bit of homework done too.

The latest on the basketball team I am coaching is good news. Although we did lose our last game, they boys are starting to figure out “basketball”. The whole bad attitude issue that we were dealing with before is starting to blow over, a couple of the players are starting to see that it is a lot more enjoyable when they aren’t in trouble all of the time.

Now to totally switch tracks, here is a fun picture from Halloween a couple of weeks ago

fun picture from Halloween a couple of weeks ago

Here are some updates from around campus:

You don’t even have to get out of your car, take advantage of that! They will also be offered at the Kenai Armory on South Forest Drive in Kenai.

The Russian American Colony Singers will be in Kenai. The Kenai Peninsula College Showcase, UAA Diversity Council, and Rotary International present “The World of Folk”. Today is Operation Room Nurse Day!

Don’t ask me, I don’t know

November 7, 2006

Well today is beautiful day- until you step outside and the cold freezes you all the way to the bone. The heater in my car is not keeping up with the drop in the temperature, I think it has actually been blowing out cold air for the past couple of days. I am looking into buying an auto start but I’m not too sure if I want to spend that much money. If anyone knows a reliable place that sells them and has a good deal, let me know!

This weekend was an exciting one. Two of my favorite people in the world got engaged, Chris DesOrmeaux and Sarah Hawkins. Congratulations you guys! I am super excited for them and Sarah’s ring is gorgeous. If you see her around, makes sure you ask to see it! King’s Treasures, the new Bible book store in Kenai, had their grand opening this weekend. They have a pretty nice setup, there is a cozy corner of the store with some tables, chairs, and beanbags where people can just relax. They had live music and I won a free t-shirt. It turned out to be a pretty fun night.

My basketball team had games on Saturday and Monday. They kicked major butt in their first game, but fell apart in yesterday’s game. They are a pretty good team, but attitude still seems to be an issue though.

Tomorrow Mercury is going to be passing directly in front of the sun. The next time this happens won’t be until 2016, don’t miss out! Andy Veh is going to have special telescopes set up for your use from 10am to 3pm.

On November 11th there is going to be am appetizer/dessert buffet and auction at the Soldotna Sports Center to support the After the Bell program. For more info contact Ginger at 262-7516

The Career Fair is on Friday. Prepare for the invasion of high schoolers! They really aren’t that bad (remember, I am one). It is a great opportunity for them to see what KPC has to offer, so be nice.

Make sure you vote today too! There are less fortunate countries in the world that don’t get this opportunity, so take advantage of it!

Today is Dunce Day, I can think of a few people who could fit right in to that category!

November 2, 2006

So how did everyone’s Halloween go? I ended up giving out candy to the trick-or-treaters at my house. They were some pretty determined kids, it was so cold outside I don’t know how they did it. I didn’t wear a costume all day and decided at the last minute to throw one together to answer the door in. I really don’t know where it came from, but here is what I came up with…

Halloween Fun!

My cousin, Annie, decided to join me about half way through the night. I have to say, our costumes were a ton of fun.

I lied last week. I was all excited and ready to go and then found out that the hay tunnel is this Friday, which is really disappointing because now I can’t go. The basketball team I am coaching has a practice at about the same time so… that is where I will be. They have a game on Saturday; I am pretty excited because they are really good. They are starting to work as team. If anyone has any suggestions on coaching, please let me know. As I said before, it is probably one of the most challenging things I have ever done.

Updates:
If you are a degree seeking student, you are able to register for the spring semester right now online. Don’t wait until the last minute; you might miss out on a class that you need to graduate!

KMS still needs mentors for its students. If you are at all interested, give Kenai Middle School a call @ 283-4896. Don’t miss out on a great opportunity to have a positive impact on a pre-teens life. Most of them just need somebody to be there for them and to listen to them. Think about it.

That is about it for today; I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Today is National Deviled Egg Day. I am not a huge fan of eggs, so I think I might sit this one out.

October 31, 2006

Hey guys! Well last night was the first game for the basketball team I am coaching. It was a lot of fun. The kids have come a long way in a short amount of time, besides the occasional random half court shot, everything went great. It was crazy to try and keep track of everyone playing equal time, but I tried and that’s what counts right? I do believe we won too (they clear the scoreboard after each quarter). Anyways, I will keep you posted as more games come up.

So, Halloween eh? I’m not really feeling it this year, but I think I might be taking a friends son out trick-or-treating. Trying to think of a good costume has to be one of the hardest things ever. I was a Squirrel Hunter last year, but that is a whole different story….haha. I realize just about all of you figure you are too old for such nonsense. Well let me tell you something: You will never be too old for any kind of nonsense, especially dressing up for Halloween. Even Dave has still got a little Halloween spirit…

Halloween Spirit

I think I may actually be more excited for Thanksgiving. I know everyone thinks that their grandma makes the best food BUT my grandma does make the best food. Thanksgiving at my grandma’s is as close as anyone will ever get to Heaven while still breathing.

Jana Query was October’s e-mail winner! All she did was check her email every day and she ended up winning 50 bucks to use at the KPC bookstore! November’s contest will be starting soon, so make sure you’re logging on.

Kenai Middle School still needs some mentors to work with students. If you would like more info on that, call Mark Manuel @ 283-4896.

The Psych Club bake sale was yesterday. I do realize that that has nothing to do with today, but I just wanted everyone to know that I did in fact eat an eyeball. I will hopefully have a pic of it up soon.

THE HALLOWEEN COSTUME CONTEST IS TODAY! Forgot about it? You had better get creative fast, there will be some pretty cool prizes given away at the end. Don’t miss out!!

Today is Halloween!! According to the weird website I get all of the crazy holidays for my blog, it is also National Magic Day and Increase Your Psychic Powers Day. Anybody got any good magic tricks?

October 26, 2006

Hey guys! What do you think about that white stuff out on the ground? I was not a happy camper when I woke up to it. I just wasn’t ready for it. I love snow machining and sledding and all, but I REALLY do not like being cold. I guess as always, I will just have to embrace it. I do live in Alaska after all. I am actually excited because I plan on making a lot more time for snowboarding and skiing this year. Last year just didn’t work out with that.

Tomorrow I am going to Solid Rock Bible Camp to go through their hay tunnel. If you have no idea what I’m talking about- man are you missing out! It is the best thing ever. Once a year around Halloween they set up a huge tunnel/maze in one of the big barns out there. You crawl into a little opening and have to find your way out. It goes all the way up to the top- all over the place. It is a ton of fun; it’s just one of those things that you have to try out to understand it. So I am looking forward to that.

The basketball team I am coaching is going great. The boys on the team are actually listening now- we have a game on Monday actually. It is probably one of the most difficult things I have done so far and it is only a couple of weeks into the season. I am actually really enjoying it though, it gives you a whole new perspective on things when you are on the other side of the whistle.

OPEN MIC NIGHT will be here on Friday! If you haven’t been to one before, you really need to check it out. KPC is full of interesting talent.

Halloween is right around the corner, what are you going to be? If you belong to the group who claim they are too old for such a Holiday…you are wrong! You can never be too old! Get out an old costume, go get a new one, or just throw something together- it all works. Just get out there and have some fun- and if you want, you can even give all of your candy to me. KPC will be having a costume contest on Halloween from 12-8pm. Get creative and win some prizes!

Career Day is on the 10th, so prepare yourselves for the invasion of high schoolers. Adult career transitioners are welcome also. If you want some more info on it, go talk to Krista in the Career Center.

Today is Hilary Clinton’s birthday and Mule Day….ha-ha no comment.

October 24, 2006

Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday. Nothing too special about it, except that it’s one day closer to Friday than Monday is. I had a fairly entertaining weekend. A friend scored some free tickets to the Bellamy Brother’s concert on Saturday, so I ended up going to that. I have to say that it was a very unique experience. The brothers were “older” and were 110% country. I believe they had some big hits back in the 70’s. Anyways, the main attraction was anywhere but the stage. Somewhere in between “My Truck Broke Down” and “My Woman Left Me” a group of women decided they would grace the audience with their dancing. So basically, we had 6 or 7 “older” women shakin it like there was no tomorrow next to the stage. I would have laughed, I guess, but I think I was in shock. I have never wanted to look away from something so bad, but of course I couldn’t and watched the entire show. I guess what really completed the entire night would have to be the session of “cowboy confessions” by the opening act. They were entirely too familiar with Willie Nelson’s extracurricular activities. Other than that fun night, my weekend was mediocre. Worked on homework, spent some time with the fam, went to church. The usual.

Career Day is just about here. I have never been to one, so I really couldn’t tell you what to expect. Probably lots of high “schoolers” running around the campus. But hey, if you can deal with me on a daily basis than you can deal with anything. It is November 10th from 8-11:30am. Adult career “transitioners” are also welcome to come check out Career Day also.

DO NOT forget about Open Mic Night this Friday! It is going to be at 7pm. If you would like to sign up, stop by the Student Union office.
There will be a Halloween costume contest from 12-8 next Tuesday. Sweet prizes will be given out, so get creative!

It’s National Bologna Day!!! Yes!! That happens to be my favorite kind of sandwich.

October 19, 2006

Alright, I guess I will start by saying that I was right about the basketball team. There were only 5 players that showed up for the first class and it felt like there were 50 of them. There might have been a few moments where I was actually cowering in a corner hoping they wouldn’t see me. Ha-ha, no it wasn’t THAT bad. But it was pretty bad. They definitely are not afraid to speak their minds. I have a good feeling though, I figure if I just make them run a lot then they won’t talk to me.

Everyone has been pretty bogged down with midterms this week. NOT ME! Thankfully, I haven’t had any. This has been a pretty tough week though. All sorts of stuff is going around, colds, flu. So if you are feeling a little under the weather, think you may be getting sick, STAY AWAY FROM ME. Go see Carrie Burford in Financial Aid, she would love it. I’ve done my time with being sick though, I can’t say I’m actually completely over it yet.

The pizza feed is today at 5pm in the commons. It’s free pizza, don’t miss out. AND it also happens to be Nathan Brophy’s birthday today. Make sure you stop in at the Student Union office today and tell him how old he’s starting to look.

There is going to be a new clay exhibit in the Gary L. Freeburg Gallery on Sunday. Two off the wall guys from Homer, Paul Dungan & Paul Eneboe, are the artists. There are things from huge platters to unusual sculptural forms; these guys have done it all. They will be talking about their art at 3:30 pm on Sunday if you’re interested. Sounds pretty interesting, so don’t miss out.

Today is International Credit Union Day and Yorktown Day.

October 17, 2006

Hey guys! I have decided that I am the biggest procrastinator that ever lived. Here I am, studying for a chemistry test only hours away and trying to write a book report on a book I haven’t even opened yet. On top of all that I have had the flu, so the past few days have been hectic. On Saturday I took the SATs, I am soooo happy that’s over with. That took a huge load off my shoulders.

I start coaching a Boys and Girls Club basketball team today, it is a 5th and 6th grade Boys team so I am fairly confident that my patience will be tested and pushed to its limits. Boys have a way of doing that to you, no matter what their age.

Living in the small unexciting town that we live in, there is not really anything going on. Most people are starting to get weighed down by school and work, I know I am. But it’s all a part of life right? Try not to forget to make time for some fun every now and then.

Here are a few updates from around the campus:

There is going to be a pizza feed hosted by the Student Union in the commons on Thursday. It’s going to be at 5pm, so come hungry. One thing I have noticed about KPC is that there is a lot of free pizza. Someone has got to love us.

There are new clocks being installed all around the campus. They will all finally give the same time, no more thinking that you’re getting to class early and actually end up being 10 minutes late. I seem to have a problem with that, with or without clocks.

KDLL is having a one day membership drive on the 20th. Suzy Kendrick, KPC’s community relations coordinator, will be on the air from 4pm-6pm. Call her and make a pledge to keep public radio on the central Peninsula.

Today is Gaudy Day. Good luck with that.

October 12, 2006

I am sorry to say that Thursday is in fact very much like Tuesday as far as my life and news goes. The most exciting thing that has happened in the past couple of days? Well, there were 3 caribou right outside the Commons yesterday. They were the center of everyone’s attention for all of 15 minutes. It was actually pretty cool, I don’t get see them that often. Here is a pic that I took, check out the rack on that thing!

Caribou visits KPC
Caribou on Campus
Only in Alaska!

Homework is steadily piling up and the weather is steadily getting worse. I seem to be spending more and more time on the computer every day. Everything needs to be typed these days. Exciting isn’t it? If only you could see the look on my face right now. I might just live in a one-man tent in the middle of the woods next year. No computers or any reason to do any kind of homework out there. And I hear the pinecones are very nutritious.

For those of you who are country fans, Sugarland is going to be in Anchorage on Monday. I am not going because I am the biggest loser in the world. What’s your excuse? The Newsboys, for those of you of the Christian persuasion, will be there sometime in November too. The good tickets are already sold out so I have lost all hope of attending that one too. I guess life will go on though *sigh* .

Well, today is the last day for the Student Forum. It is @ 2:15 AND there is FREE pizza. So if you’ve got a question for KPC’s director, Gary Turner, then stop by and fire away.

Today is International Moment Of Frustration Scream Day. It really is, I didn’t make it up. Anyone else going to celebrate and scream a little?

October 10, 2006

I have just one thing to say- If I were trapped on a desert island and had to pick someone to be there with me, I would take the entire UAA hockey team. Alright, so I’m just kidding- for the most part. As most of you have probably already heard, the UAA hockey team was here over the weekend and played Canada. I really couldn’t tell you which Canada team it was, I am horrible at paying attention to those details. But they came and they conquered, 3-1. It was kind of a letdown but I’m not really that big into hockey so I got over it pretty quick. I go to those games to see the fights- I know every single one of you do too, so don’t even give me that face. There was one minor fight that was pretty entertaining but other than that, zip. I took my younger brother who had never been to a hockey game before, which was pretty cool. I actually knew more about hockey than someone else for once. I am pretty confident that it was probably the first and last time that will ever happen. By the end of the game, I was the rookie again- he was explaining things to me.

Other than that my weekend was pretty relaxed. I went to see both The Guardian and Open Season. The Guardian was really good but REALLY long, if you have the attention span than I suggest you see it. It’s a tear jerker. Open Season on the other hand was hilarious. I loved it. It’s probably the type of movie that you either really hate or really love (it’s a cartoon). For those of you with a sense of humor and who still remain children at heart (or have kids), I highly recommend that you see it.

Student Union is looking for some representatives. Student Union representatives are voting members of the legislative branch of the Student Union. They get to vote on things like prices in the vending machines (they just went up) and other important issues. They help plan and run campus events and assist the officers. They get to be more involved in the political aspect of KPC than the average student is. They are the voice of the student body. Not to mention it would look really good on transcripts and resumes. It doesn’t require a whole lot of your time, there is one mandatory meeting a week that is only about an hour long. If this sounds like something that you would be interested in, stop by the Student Union office and talk to one of the officers or talk to Sue Lee or Bill Howell. I recommend getting involved; it makes the campus experience a lot more fun.

Today is National Angel Food Cake Day, by the way. Yumm?

October 5, 2006

Today is an amazing day. Ok, maybe I lied. I just thought that would be a different way to start out today’s blog. Today is actually a pretty “blah” day. It’s the day in between a very fun yesterday and a promising tomorrow. I’m hoping that makes sense to everyone, it does to me but that doesn’t really mean much. I have a lot to do today, I waited until the last minute (yet again) to do some very time consuming homework and it is due in T-minus 61 minutes. WooHoo! I just thought I would throw that in there for my own sake.

My cousin has been staying with me all this week. She is a pretty crazy girl, so it has been interesting. She is a senior at Sohi…blah! (i go to Kenai remember). We did stay up until about midnight last night playing dominoes. I think the game was called chicken foot, it was actually pretty fun. We also did what is required every time someone brings out the dominoes- we spent forever lining them up perfectly into curvy designs and then fought over who got to knock them over. It was a night of very cheap entertainment, you should try it out sometime.

Student Union had the Air Hockey Tournament yesterday. I was working at student services but managed to get a few games in. The table they rented was kind of small and well…cheap. More than a few innocent bystanders were struck by the out of control pucks. That may have added to the fun though. Cheap table or not, I had a lot of fun. I’m not sure if it’s till out in the commons today, if it is you should grab someone and play. Student Union is also having a drawing for a free ticket to the UAA game this Saturday. The drawing is tomorrow (Friday) at noon. The hockey game is at 7pm on Saturday I believe. Tickets are $10 at the bookstore if you’re interested. I went a couple of years ago and had a ton of fun. I’m not even that huge of a hockey fan either.

The KPC myspace page is coming along great. We need some student musicians to feature on it, so it you are or know of someone that is let us know! Musician or not though, check out KPC’s page. It’s not “officially” launched yet, but add KPC as a friend and we’ll keep you updated.

Have a fun weekend!

Today is National Storytelling day. That is kind of lame in my opinion, maybe I will make up a more interesting one. How about National Somebody Please Donate to My Bank Account Day? I like that one.

October 3, 2006

So who all went to the Open Mic Night on Friday? I went for awhile and the crowd was pretty good sized. There is a lot of talent floating around; I really have to say that I never thought that I would ever hear a poem about constipation. But Friday night definitely proved otherwise. I didn’t stay for the whole thing because I took part in putting together a surprise birthday for a friend, which worked out beautifully. We had the best cake ever; Coldstone really knows how to get the job done.

Brook Paige
KPC Open Mic Night

I’m going to apologize right now if I spelt her name wrong; I didn’t get to see the signup sheet so I’m just going with what sounds right. Anyways, I got to see Brooke perform before I had to leave and she has got a set of lungs on her. She sang a few of her own songs which were beautiful AND she had a pink guitar, so that was pretty cool.

I didn’t make it to the bed race but the word on the street is that we came in 2nd. I saw pictures of it and it did look like a lot of fun. I wish I had gotten to see it. My brother ended up having a soccer game in Nikiski, so I was freezing my butt off out there instead -they did get 2nd place in Boroughs though, so that was pretty cool!

I have been noticing the very unpleasant drop in temperature lately. Although I do appreciate the beauty in the changing seasons, I wish it would just stop. If this winter is going to be anything like last year, man are we in for it. I know there are some people out there that live for winter and I totally support that, just keep the door closed, the heat up, and the snow off of me and I wont complain- that much.

Halloween is almost here! I’m usually not that big into this particular holiday, but this year I think I just may have to dress up. And I hear that you are never too old to trick-or-treat, so I think that we better at least embrace that. Plus, what other day of the year can you eat as much candy as you want and not feel the least bit remorseful? If that’s not motivation, I don’t know what is.

FYI: A Myspace page for KPC is being built and is looking for student music to feature on its page. If you are of the musically inclined and wouldn’t mind the attention, see Suzy Kendrick or email me Whitney Brown

Today is Virus Appreciation Day. I really have no idea why somebody would decide that that needs to be a holiday, but I guess it happens. So, uh, if you have a virus, can you try to look on the bright side of it today?

September 28, 2006

I don’t know about you guys, but I am flat broke. I’m sure it’s only just a little taste of what next year will bring. Carrie Burford gave me a neat little packet that is all about being in college and being broke. It is actually pretty informing, I think that they have a few extras if any of you are interested in some free tips on being happy and broke at the same time- good luck!

Well there isn’t much going on that I haven’t already written about a billion times. If you are into the outdoors- it is beautiful right now. Take a walk outside the campus by the river, you will not be disappointed. Its beauty ALMOST makes me forget that winter is right around the corner. I wish I could crawl into a den and hibernate right along with the bears. I am definitely not a fan of the cold. But, I have decided that I am going to take advantage of the fact that I do live in Alaska and make a few more trips to Alyeska this year.

I better see all of you at the Open Mic Night tomorrow. There are some talented people signed up, don’t miss out! Also, don’t forget that the Lions Bed Race is on Saturday @ 2pm. You can check out KPC’s “bed” today if you would like. It is under the stairs in the Commons, right in front of Student Services.

The Nonviolent Sexuality Seminar is today. You have two chances to check it out- 2pm and 7pm. It is going to be in the Ward building in Room 109. I think it is going to be worth checking out, let’s just see if I can convince one of my instructors to let me out of class a little early.

Today is Ask a Stupid Question Day, Ben E. King’s birthday, Ed Sullivan’s birthday, and good old Confucius’ birthday. Friday is also a very important day in history. It is Sarah Hawkins birthday! I will not reveal how old she is, I would like to live to see my next birthday. Smiley Face Anyways, if you know her, wish her a happy birthday. If you don’t know her, still wish her a happy birthday. She is an amazing individual.

September 26, 2006

Oh man this week is already a long one. I woke up Monday morning thinking, “today is going to be an awesome day.” 12 hours, a pot of coffee, and 3 trips to the coffee barn later I think I realized that this week just isn’t going to be my week. I think I may just be caught up in a stressful day though, who knows what tomorrow will bring (although I feel safe in saying that it will most likely be more homework and an even longer to-do list). I bet everyone knows what its like to lock your keys in your car right? Yeah, me especially. Upon getting out of my car, locking it, and firmly shutting my door I forgot to grab my keys somewhere along the line. Man I love it (that was very, very sarcastic). The greatest thing is that I have one of those magnetic hide-away key boxes with a spare key in it and everything—too bad it was still sitting inside of my car. It happens I guess, just a little more often than most when it comes to me.

I think I have decided to stay in good old Alaska next year. I have thought long and hard about it and it just seems like the right decision to make. However, I reserve the right to change my mind at any given moment. Alaska is just home to me, I don’t think I could find a better place. Where else can you see a moose, wolf, caribou, and bear all in one day? Most likely on the same stretch of road too. So for now anyways, one big decision has finally been made.

I am so excited for the open mic night on Friday (7pm-10pm)! I don’t really know what to expect because I have never been to one at KPC before, but I don’t think I’m going to be disappointed. There is also going to be a free Nonviolent Sexuality seminar, on Thursday, presented by Bob Hall. It is going to be at 2pm and 7pm in the Ward building. I think it is definitely worth checking out. And last but definitely not least, the Vera Howarth Memorial Bed Race is this weekend!! It is going to be on Saturday, September 30th, @ 2pm on Park Street (by the Soldotna Senior Citizens Center). Is yet another victory in store for KPC? Don’t miss it!

**I have some pretty cool news. Well I think it is cool anyways…. KPC is starting up a Myspace page. It is going to be full of cool stuff, 100% original. I can guarantee you’ve never seen anything like it before. I will keep you updated as we get closer to launching it!

Today, September 26th, is National Good Neighbor Day and National Pancake Day. Too bad there isn’t an IHOP close by, that place is the best!

Have any suggestions or comments?

September 20, 2006

Hey guys! Thursday has finally come. It is like Friday for me, my last classes are on Thursday. What to do this weekend….there isn’t too much going on. Having trouble making plans for the weekend like I am? There is some pretty good movies out- or so I hear. Gridiron Gang, Black Dahlia, Flyboys (comes out tomorrow), and All the King’s Men (also comes out tomorrow). It seems like a pretty good weekend to spend an outrageous amount of money just to watch a movie.

There was a power outage at the college today. I was at student services diligently working *cough* when the escapades began. First the power went out, that wasn’t so bad. At least the phones wouldn’t ring--or so I thought. Turns out the phones not only still worked, but all of the voicemail was down SO every call was coming to student services. It was hectic--but highly entertaining. We had about 20 minutes of solid down time before the phones went crazy. Everyone in the office was just innocently chatting-- or so I thought. Let me just say that the point of no return in the conversation was when Harry Potter was brought up, you really don’t want to know what followed.

Working Hard or Hardly Working?

Working Hard or Hardly Working?

Good times indeed. I did learn something new today actually: You have to wait until the red light goes off on the motion activated paper towel dispensers before it will give you more. It took me a considerable amount of time and frustration to get that down.

Classes are going ok. This week has been a long and busy one. It seemed like all I did was write essays. I am still trying to figure out blackboard. Give me all the directions you got- I’m still not going to figure it out. I have decided it is a lost cause.

The student union is getting together a new constitution to be adopted by students. Some of the things they are proposing is the campus name adoption- Kenai River Campus and just bringing the document up to date (the last time it was ratified was in ’92). It is allegedly supposed to be updated every three years- somebody missed the memo I guess (just kidding guys)! If you would like to check the current constitution and the revised one, you can do so at student services. The voting forms are also at their office, you can vote through September 30th.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 24th, KPC will be hosting the Gary L. Freeburg Gallery. The artist, Barry McWayne, is a black and white photographer and is from Fairbanks. Following that at 4 p.m., there will be an artist gallery talk. Barry McWayne is also going to be offering a workshop that night and Monday. Interested? Go check it out!

Remember the open mic night on the 29th. It is the first one of the semester and it sounds promising. I am excited to see KPC’s talent.

Today is World Gratitude Day and International Banana Festival Day. Joe should be giving away free banana splits today, where is his holiday spirit?

September 19, 2006

Well guys it is Tuesday, only 3 more days until the weekend again! Not much has changed since last Tuesday (I had some technical difficulties with my blog last week so that’s why there wasn’t one on Thursday). Man, last week was a hectic one. I had so much going on, I don’t know how I made it out alive! But I definitely enjoyed my weekend, I went to my last homecoming dance on Saturday, it was a sad night- but yet so much fun! Its hard letting go of the security of high school, but on the other side of that, I love being at the college! So its kind of a sweet goodbye type of thing, I might be getting ahead of myself though, there is a lot of the year left to go!

Any poker players out there? I watched a good sized poker tournament this weekend, it was a lot of fun. I wish I had known how to play- the winner walked away with 100+ dollars! However, I learned later on that the so-called poker tournament was highly illegal. Who woulda thought? I guess there has been some poker games interrupted by our local police in the past few weeks, I don’t know if its just me, but I would think that there are other things going on in our community that deserve the police’s attention a lot more than a group of high schoolers throwing a few bucks into a poker game. They could be doing a lot worse. It’s just a thought though….

Alright enough of that, lets move on to some more student employee interviews. First up is Andrew Adams.

Andrew Adams
Andrew Adams

Andy is a Peer Student Advisor. His favorite part about his job is that he gets to interact with fellow students. The downside to this job, he says, is the lack of hours. Student workers are only allowed, by law, to work up to 20 hours a week. When Andy “grows up” he wants to be a Network Systems Administrator.

Now this next gorgeous girl didn’t want her pic taken, so you will just have to imagine one. Her name is Ginger Rose. Ginger is also a Peer Student Advisor and is originally from Boston. She’s diggin’ AK too. She said, “I like Alaska better than Boston. The small town atmosphere is more for me.” Her favorite part about her job is being able to help people by making their transition into college easier. Just like Andy, she wishes that students could work more hours. When she “grows up” she wants to be an elementary school teacher. She is brave, being a teacher isn’t a piece of cake. Speaking of cake, Jose’s Café is pretty dang good. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should give it a try. A very reliable source tells me that he makes some awesome pasta.

Well, that’s about it for today. You guys know that the health clinic is open right? It is available to all students who are taking at least 6 credits- take advantage of it, its FREE! It is open Monday through Thursday, 12:30-5:30. Also, the Vera Howarth Memorial Bed Race is on September 30th, so don’t make any plans. I have never been to it, but how could that not be entertaining?! Anyways, be sure to check it out!

Today is National Butterscotch Pudding day, a wonderful excuse for extra dessert tonight!

September 12, 2006

Hey guys! How was everyone’s weekend? Mine was pretty fun, I went up to the PBR (Professional Bull Riding) in Anchorage with my family on Saturday. For those of you who think that is pretty lame- you couldn’t be more wrong! I saw guys get their butts kicked and land in positions that no man should ever have to. I thought it was pretty sweet, catch me around campus with my camera and I’ll show you some video clips. I will admit I can think of many other ways to spend a Saturday night, but I would have gone against everything that is woman had I said no to a stadium FULL of cowboys. Especially this one-

Guy on bull

Guy on bull.

Sorry about the picture quality, but I think you get the idea. It was hard to get a good pic of this talented cowboy, the bull he was riding wouldn’t sit still.

School is still going great. I have yet to feel completely overwhelmed, so that’s good (though I am expecting it any day now!) We have started doing workshops in my creative writing class, which may or may not be the end of me. I should explain this whole creative writing class situation. It is strictly “about place”. Just in case that’s not clear enough (which in my case it wasn’t): We write about places. I think that I made the most prevalent mistake known to unsuspecting new students while registering for classes- I didn’t read the ENTIRE class description. I thought it just sounded cool. That is one mistake I will never make again. I can’t say that I completely dislike the class, it has been interesting. It drew a lot of different personalities into it, its fun to hear such drastically differing views on things. Everything else about being a semi-college student is everything and more than I expected. I have met a lot more of the students and I have to say that I love the diversity of them (you) all. Working at student services has been exciting. If you haven’t taken the time to get to know the staff, you are missing out. They are a pretty crazy bunch.

Anyways, I thought that I would start including a little somethin’ about new student employees every so often. Today we’re going to start with Nathan Brophy.

Nathan Brophy

Nathan Brophy

Nathan likes long walks on the beach and candlelit dinners. Have similar interests (ladies)? You know where to find him!

In his time away from the beach, he is the Student Union Production Officer. A few things that he and the other officers do are organize events, issue ID cards- I still need to get one, and coordinate community wide student discount programs. He said that his favorite part about the job is getting to have an active role in campus activities. What he doesn’t like about it is, “The office, it’s a really small room with no air conditioning.” I second that, I was in the office for all of 5 minutes and it was kind of tight. My last question for Nathan was, what do you want to be when you “grow up”? His answer: “I want to be independently wealthy, a CEO of my own company.” I like that answer. It reminded me of that old question, what would you do if you had a million dollars? I think that I would travel the world and buy a lot of stuff that I didn’t need. What would you do with a million bucks? E-mail me and let me know.

Don’t make any plans for the 29th, it is Open Mic Night here at the college. So come and check out all the talent. I will be there, not as part of the talent, but with my camera in hand. Good luck with classes this week- you’ll make it, just remember to breathe!

Oh, I almost forgot. Today September 12 is, like every other day (as I pointed out in my first blog), a holiday. Today is Video Games Day and Defenders Day (in Maryland). So for all of you extreme gamers, you don’t need to make up any excuses for being glued to your X-box all day! I have yet to understand the hold that Halo has over so many, but that is an entirely different blog…..

September 7, 2006

Hey guys, my name is Whitney Brown and I am the new student blogger. My job, like the ones before me, is to write journals about the campus life from a student’s perspective. I am a senior in high school (yeah I know, I am young) and just started taking a couple classes here. A few of you might know me, but I’m guessing most of you don’t. But hey, that’s ok. I guess that could work to my advantage just in case I make a complete fool of myself.

Being so new, I really am not that familiar with the campus, so I am working on it. I have already met a lot of really cool people (mostly staff) so I am very excited. I guess I should share a little about myself so you guys kind of have an idea of what I’m about. There really aren’t very many interesting things about me, I could make some up, but that would be pitiful wouldn’t it? I guess I’ll stick with the basics.

Like I said, I’m a senior in high school and am going through the Jumpstart program to take some classes here (I’m taking sign language and creative writing). So far the classes are going great- this is only the first couple of weeks though. I am also working as a Peer Advisor a few hours a week, so you might even see me around the office every once in awhile too. I like writing and am planning on becoming a Journalist someday. Hopefully that some day comes sooner than later, but I guess all good things take time. I am also writing for the Verbatim column in the Clarion every couple of weeks, so look out for that. I have lived here all of my life and am 100% Alaskan, right down to my extremely white skin (comes with the red hair I’m told).

Enough about that though, did anyone else hear the sad news about the crocodile hunter over the weekend? It’s crazy. If anyone was going to live forever, I thought it would be him- I mean the guy wrestled crocodiles for fun! I was definitely a fan, (notice the picture-I’m holding my ‘crocs’- it’s my last minute random idea for a tribute to the crocodile legend), I am going to deeply miss him and his crazy outbursts of Australian slang. On a more serious note though, if you do happen to be the praying type, I bet his family could use some right about now.

Anyways, good luck with your classes and I hope your Labor Day weekend was as relaxing and fun as mine was. I will do my best to keep you updated on things going on around campus. If you have any comments or something you would like posted on here, email me at isweb1@uaa.alaska.edu

-Every day is a Holiday- (bear with me, there has to be a cheesy side to every blog)

Today, September 7th, is more than just another Thursday. It also happens to be musician Buddy Holly’s birthday (not really sure who that is), Independence Day in Brazil, and the day Google was founded on.

Betchya didn’t know that!
