Screencasting is an effective way to record your lesson once, then present your video across semesters. KPC has subscriptions for Screencast-o-matic Pro and also Kaltura CaptureSpace. Additionally, Microsoft’s PowerPoint Mix plugin is free and simple if you only want to record over PowerPoint slides. These programs record your computer screen, webcam, or both. It is recommended to have a quality headset with microphone and a quiet working area. 

ETT has a limited number of license upgrades for Screencast-o-matic. Please contact ETT’s Educational Technology Technician, Jimmy Tuttle, for more information. If you are new to Screencast-o-matic, please review these tutorials.

Install CaptureSpace by logging in to MediaSpace (upper right) with your UA username and password, click Add New, then Record a Presentation. Download and run the installer based on your operating system. Please review this tutorial

Install PowerPoint Mix by downloading from Microsoft’s website. After installation, open PowerPoint and click on the Mix tab. There is a button on the Mix tab that links to tutorials.


KPC currently has three captioning methods:  Kaltura’s Cielo24 plugin, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and Docsoft. Kaltura’s Cielo24 plugin and Dragon are available for employees to proactively create captions. The Docsoft server is used by ETT for Disability Support Services (DSS) requests that involve captioning.

Kaltura’s Cielo24 plugin creates captions with approximate accuracy, then the user edits the captions to 100% accuracy. This process is done within your browser. Similarly, Dragon Naturally Speaking creates captions with approximate accuracy, then the user edits the captions to 100% accuracy. This process is done by installing Dragon Naturally Speaking and Audacity on your computer. For detailed instructions, please contact Jennifer Pedersen, Lead Instructional Designer. 

For DSS requests that involve captioning, KPC partners with other UAA campuses in using a Docsoft server. So far, KPC has captioned approximately 500 videos for faculty courses and student resources. To submit a request, please fill out the Caption Request Form and follow-up with Jennifer Pedersen, Lead Instructional Designer. 

Media Conversion

ETT is able to convert disc media to a digital mp4 format, or from one digital format to another. Please complete the KPC Media Conversion Form (requires UA login) to initiate your request. 


Employees who would like to borrow from copyrighted works for educational purposes should be familiar with the copyright exemption parameters of U.S. Copyright Law section 107 (Fair Use) and the TEACH Act. 

U.S. Copyright Law section 102 states that copyright protects “original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression”, such as literary works; musical works; dramatic works; pantomimes and choreographic works; pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works; motion pictures and other audiovisual works; sound recordings; and architectural works.

U.S. Copyright Law section 107 (Fair Use) states:

“In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—
(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.”
