Campus Closure Policy

In the event that emergency closure of KRC is required for weather, natural disaster, or any other causes, the final decision for an announcement of closure will be made by the college director.

Closure may include any one of the following arrangements:

a) Complete closure;

b) Cancellation of classes only;
Students are excused from attending class; employees are asked to report to work; employees may take leave if conditions prevent them from coming to campus; or

c) Early release from work;
Supervisors may stagger the release of employees at intervals; supervisors are expected to keep offices open until the close of regular business hours, unless conditions warrant otherwise.

1) Unless you have been told otherwise, your response to all inquiries about whether the college is open or not should be: “Yes, KRC is open.”

2) Fulltime and adjunct faculty members should make reasonable efforts to not cancel classes due to weather. It is realized some of you live well off the beaten path and there may be times when you will not be able to make it in even if others can. If that happens, call the Student Services phone number @ 262-0330 as soon as you know you are going to cancel a class, and leave a message with them or on their voice mail if it is after hours. The Class Cancellation Hotline is then updated, (262-0302) as well as the Web page "Class Cancellation” notice.

In the event that options (a) or (b) are invoked, Suzie Kendrick will notify the media. Notification will be through the following radio stations:

  • KSRM – 920 AM
  • KSLD – 1140 AM
  • KKIS – 96.5 FM
  • KDLL-91.9 FM
  • KBAY-93.3 FM
  • KPEN-102 FM

Under option (c) above, the college director’s office will notify the division chairs and department supervisors.

In the event a complete closure has been announced before regular business hours, a “phone tree” will be used to contact as many full-time staff and faculty members as possible. The college director will contact division chairs and department supervisors who will in turn call those in their divisions or departments. It is recommended that chairs and supervisors maintain an up-to-date list of home phone numbers at their home.

The goal of this policy is for the procedure to work as smoothly as possible when it is needed, to demonstrate concern for the safety of our students and employees, to respect the fact that our students expect to get the education they have paid for, and the fact that we live in Alaska requires us to live with less than ideal weather conditions.
