Marine Biology

The oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface, yet it's estimated no more than five percent have been explored.

Overview

Do you have a fascination with the sea? Are you concerned with ocean acidification, endangered sea mammals, and other marine conservation issues? Can you imagine immersing yourself in research that will help us understand climate change, invasive species, overfishing, biomedical potentials and alternative energy sources yet to be discovered? The field of marine biology can take students in many different directions.

KPC does not offer a degree in marine biology, but students are able to complete all of the general education requirements and a number of program-specific courses to be prepared to transfer into a four-year program at another UA campus or another university. Be sure to work closely with an advisor to help you identify the right program to transfer into and to be certain you identify as many program specific courses and general requirements while studying at KPC.

KPC's Kachemak Bay Campus also offers the popular Semester by the Bay program that brings students from around the country to the campus for the opportunity for academic hands-on learning experiences studying biological sciences with easy access to the cold-water marine habitats of Kachemak Bay. A selection of upper-division biology courses is offered along with others with an Alaskan theme. The semester has been designed to meet the needs of students majoring in the natural sciences in a creative and adventurous way
