Adult Basic Education
Individualized education for adults
Individualized ABE classes provide an opportunity to receive basic skills instruction in math, reading, writing, social studies, and science to improve employability and prepare for further education. Adult Basic Education also includes GED preparation and testing, English-as-a-Second Language instruction, and literacy training. Life-coping skills are also offered. Free seminars have included such topics as "Life After Public Assistance" and "Dyslexia--The Hidden Handicap."
English-as-a-Second Language instruction is available to non-native English speakers. Students learn English for daily communication and work. Reading skills are not a requirement for these classes. Instruction is open enrollment and individualized. These courses are free. Register by calling the Learning Center at (907) 262-0327.
Basic skills refresher courses are free and participants can register anytime. ABE sites include Kenai, Ninilchik and Tyonek.
ABE is provided by the KRC Learning Center in collaboration with Proliteracy Worldwide, the Orton Dyslexia Society, the Alaska Adult Education Association, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), AmeriCorps National Service Program and the College Learning and Reading Association.
