Adult Basic Education
Individualized education for adults
ABE includes basic skills refresher courses that are free and participants can register at anytime. KPC sites include KRC Learning Center (Soldotna), KBC Learning Center (Homer), Voznesenka, Nikolaevsk, Ninilchik, Anchor Point, Nanwalek, Port Graham, Seldovia and Tyonek.
Students can upgrade skills for personal or employment needs. Traditional subjects include:
- Math
- Reading
- Writing
- Social studies
- Science
- Life-coping skills
Adult Basic Education also includes GED preparation and testing, English-as-a-Second Language instruction, and literacy training. Life-coping skills are also offered. Free seminars have included such topics as "Life After Public Assistance" and "Dyslexia--The Hidden Handicap."
English-as-a-Second Language instruction is available to non-native English speakers. Students learn English for daily communication and work. Reading skills are not a requirement for these classes. Instruction is open enrollment and individualized. These courses are free.
